The Roadrunners made it two victories in as many days Jan. 4 at the Fred E. Davis Multipurpose Center, defeating the Metropolitan Community College-Penn Valley Scouts from Kansas City. SFCC (12-5) took a four-point lead at 40-36 into the locker room at halftime and outscored the Scouts 55-40 the second half to claim a 95-76 victory.
“We did a better job of getting defensive stops in the second half,” said Roadrunners Head Coach Kevin Thomas. “Our defense helped us jumpstart our offense and get some easy baskets in transition, and we were able to extend the lead out a little bit.”
Sophomore guard Kenny Chery led his team with 19 points and eight rebounds. Sophomore wing Jacob Williams contributed 14 points and freshman guard Kevin Punter added 12 points. Freshman wing Dashawn Stitt chipped in with 11 points and freshman guard Ben Denbow knocked down 10 points. Freshman guard Joe Thomasson dished out a team-high seven assists, and he and Punter tied for the team lead in steals with two apiece.
SFCC will open its first season of Midwest Community College Athletic Conference play Jan. 8 when the Roadrunners travel to St. Louis to take on the St. Louis Community College Archers. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
