The Roadrunners closed out day one of the Stone Laser Imaging Classic in the Fred E. Davis Multipurpose Center with a 108-89 victory over the Independence Community College Pirates from Independence, Kan. SFCC (4-2) took a 45-44 lead into halftime and outscored Independence 63-45 in the second half to claim the victory.
“We did a good job of guarding the first 10 minutes of the game,” said Roadrunners Head Coach Kevin Thomas. “Independence had a hard time scoring. We built the lead up to double digits and then started fouling. Independence made their free throws and got back into the game.”
Sophomore forward Jacob Williams led six Roadrunners in double-figure scoring with 25 points. Freshman guard Joe Thomasson contributed 21 points and dished out a team-high six assists. Sophomore forward Charles Beard added 14 points and freshman guard Ben Denbow pitched in with 13 points. Freshman wing Dashawn Stitt registered a double double with 11 points and a team-leading 13 rebounds. Sophomore forward Ayo Ojo also added 11 points. Denbow led the team in steals with three.
