The Roadrunners got back on the winning track Nov. 13 with an 82-71 victory over the Southeastern Community College Blackhawks from West Burlington, Iowa. SFCC (3-2) jumped out to a 10-2 advantage early in the contest.
“I thought our defensive pressure bothered them a little bit especially early on in the game,” said Roadrunners Head Coach Kevin Thomas. “We were able to get some stops on defense and create some turnovers. Our guys did a good job sharing the basketball; to end up with 17 assists as a team is really good.”
SFCC took a 43-29 lead into halftime. The Roadrunners extended the advantage to 18 points at 73-55 in the second half. The Blackhawks made a run about midway through the second half, but SFCC made the plays down the stretch to preserve the victory.
Freshman wing Dashawn Stitt led SFCC in scoring with 21 points, including six three-pointers. Freshman guard Joe Thomasson contributed 14 points and freshman guard Kevin Punter added 13. Sophomore guard Kenny Chery registered 11 points in his return from injury. Sophomore forward Ayo Ojo pulled down a team-high six rebounds and Thomasson dished out a team-high nine assists.
SFCC will host the Stone Laser Imaging Classic Nov. 16-17. The Roadrunners will play Independence Community College Friday and Harcum College Saturday. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. both nights.
“We have to play with a lot of effort and passion again on Friday and Saturday nights,” said Thomas. “Independence and Harcum are both good teams. We look forward to the challenge.”
