The Roadrunners emerged with an 84-74 victory Oct. 24 when they participated in the annual Highway 65 Shoot-Out in Marshall. SFCC played the Missouri Valley College to close its preseason schedule.
“We started off well,” said Roadrunners Head Coach Kevin Thomas. “I don’t feel like we dictated to them like we did on Sunday. Missouri Valley was scrappy and played tough. There were 46 combined fouls called, so that slowed down the flow of the game.”
Freshman guard Kevin Punter led three Roadrunners in double figures with 25 points. Freshman guard Joe Thomasson contributed 18 points and five rebounds. Sophomore guard Kenny Chery added 13 points and five rebounds and dished out a team-high eight assists. Thomasson added five assists. Sophomore forward Ayo Ojo pulled down a team-high seven rebounds in the contest. Freshman wing Dashawn Stitt and sophomore wing Jacob Williams pulled down five rebounds apiece. Chery and Punter tied for the team lead in steals with four apiece.
The Roadrunners will open their regular season Nov. 2 against the Missouri Valley College Junior Varsity Vikings as part of the McDonald’s Classic. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. in the Fred E Davis Multipurpose Center.
“We need to focus on the details,” said Thomas. “Offensively, we need to have our players in the right spots. Defensively, we’ve got to get better at hedging ball screens. We also need to contain dribble penetration.”
