Student-Athletes Participate in Alzheimers Walk
Tuesday, September 18, 2012

Members of the State Fair Community College men’s and women’s basketball teams participated in the Walk to End Alzheimer’s on the Missouri State Fairgrounds in Sedalia on Saturday, Sept. 8. The event was a 1 mile walk to raise funds and increase awareness to help find a cure for Alzheimer’s.
“We were there just to show our support,” said Lady Roadrunners Head Coach Kevin Bucher. “My grandfather had Alzheimer’s. It was a great opportunity to show our support and help raise funds to find a cure for a disease that we would like to see gone.”
This year’s walk exceeded its goal for participants. The total amount of money raised was up about 12 percent from last year, according to the Alzheimer’s Association Mid-Missouri Chapter.
Roadrunners Head Coach Kevin Thomas also believes that it is very important for his student-athletes to be involved in events like this throughout the community.
“It’s always good for our guys to be involved in the community,” said Thomas. “It shows people that we are here and we do appreciate the support that the community gives us, and we want to give back. It also helps to build a sense of community. Hopefully, our players will realize that there’s a lot to be gained from helping others.”
