Four SFCC Basketball Players Earn All-Region Honors

Lady Roadrunners sophomore guard Ariel Easton and freshman guard Ryneka Church recently earned All-Region 16 first-team honors. The pair helped lead SFCC to an 18-12 record and a region tournament semi-final appearance this season.
Easton led the team in scoring, averaging 15.8 points per contest. She also shot a team-leading 76.4 percent from the free-throw line and averaged a team-high two steals per contest during her one season at SFCC.
“Ariel is a very good three-point shooter who can also penetrate,” said Lady Roadrunners Head Coach Kevin Bucher. “She is an all-around complete player.”
Church finished second on the team in scoring with 11.8 points per game; second in free-throw percentage with 76.1 percent; and second in steals, averaging 1.5 per game. She dished out a team-high 3.5 assists per contest and shot a team-high 33.3 percent from beyond the three-point arc to lead the team.
“I thought Ryneka was one of the better point guards in Region 16 this year,” said Bucher. “She is very athletic. She can score and play very good defense. I think her speed and athletic ability are what allowed her to make first-team All-Region.”
The Roadrunners also had a pair of guards named to the All-Region 16 team. Sophomore guard Alfonzo Houston and freshman guard Kenny Chery helped lead SFCC to a 15-15 record this season.
Houston led the team in scoring, averaging 17.8 points per game. He dished out 2.9 assists per game, which was good enough for second on the team this season. He also finished second on the team in steals, averaging 1.2 per game.
“Alfonzo is a two-year player,” said Roadrunners Head Coach Kevin Thomas. “He definitely improved from his freshman year to now. He had a solid career for us here at SFCC and did some really good things.”
Chery finished second on the team in scoring with 14.6 points per game. He dished out a team-leading 3.8 assists per game and led the team in steals per game with 1.5.
“Kenny had a really good freshman year,” said Thomas. “He definitely brings a lot to the table and we are excited to have him back. I think he’s going to have an even better season here next year. He contributes to the team in a lot of different ways. There were games when he didn’t score many points, but he affected the outcome of the game with his defense, rebounding and distributing the basketball.”
