Jefferson Defeats Lady Roadrunners
The Lady Roadrunners lost to the nationally ranked Jefferson College Vikings from Hillsboro Feb. 22 at home. SFCC (15-8, 5-4 in Region XVI) fell by a score of 77-71.
The Lady Roadrunners took an early 4-2 lead courtesy of an offensive rebound and put back from sophomore forward Jallisa Lewis. Sophomore forward/center Cheyenne Williams converted a three-point play to extend SFCC’s advantage to 15-8 with a pass from sophomore guard Alexas Brown.
SFCC freshman guard Jermisha Watson capped the half when she was fouled while attempting a layup. She made the layup but missed the free throw, giving the Lady Roadrunners a 32-25 halftime lead.
“What a great first half,” said Lady Roadrunners Head Coach Kevin Bucher. “We played really well. Unfortunately, we often come out flat in the second half. We let our opponents gain control instead of building on our lead.”
Jefferson stormed out of the locker room to cut the deficit to two at 33-31. SFCC freshman guard Brittany Silas stopped the run with a pair of free throws to quickly boost SFCC’s lead back to 36-31.
Jefferson tied the game at 53, then took a two-point lead. Freshman guard Ryneka Church made a pair of free throws to give SFCC a 58-57 advantage with just under seven minutes remaining. SFCC pushed the advantage to 64-57, then pushed its lead to 10 points at 69-59 with less than four minutes remaining. However, Jefferson went on an 18-2 run to close the game and get the comeback victory.
Church led the Lady Roadrunners with 17 points. Williams contributed 16 points and a team-high 10 rebounds. Silas added 11 points. Sophomore guard Ariel Easton dished out a team-high two assists and Brown registered a team-high three steals. Watson had a team-high two blocked shots.
