Lady Roadrunners Snap Losing Streak
The Lady Roadrunners (15-7, 5-3 in Region XVI) defeated the Moberly Area Community College Lady Greyhounds 65-55 Feb. 18 in Moberly.
The Lady Roadrunners found themselves down early in the first half. SFCC used a 9-0 run to grab a 13-12 lead, courtesy of a jump shot from sophomore guard Alexas Brown. SFCC closed the half with a 5-0 run to emerge from a back-and-forth first half with a 29-26 lead at halftime.
Moberly opened the second half with a run to take a 30-29 lead. SFCC sophomore forward Jallisa Lewis answered the run with a pair of free throws to put her team back in front.
Sophomore guard Ariel Easton scored off of a pick and roll to put SFCC up by 12 points at 45-33 with just under 13 minutes remaining. A basket from freshman guard Jermisha Watson courtesy of a pass from freshman guard Ryneka Church put SFCC up by 15 points at 54-39.
The Lady Roadrunners turned up their defensive intensity to secure the victory. SFCC forced more than 20 turnovers in the contest.
“We went to the press and the girls didn’t want to change because it was so effective,” said Lady Roadrunners Head Coach Kevin Bucher.
Church led SFCC in scoring with 15 points. Watson contributed 10 points and she and Lewis tied for the team lead in rebounds with six each. Church dished out a team-high two assists and Brown registered a team-high two steals.
SFCC returns home Feb. 22 for a huge Region XVI contest against nationally ranked Jefferson College. Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.
