Lady Roadrunners Comeback Effort Falls Short
The Lady Roadrunners dug themselves a big hole early in their contest with the Iowa Western Reivers from Council Bluffs Feb. 14. SFCC (14-8, 4-3 in Region XVI) cut the deficit to four in the second half, but could get no closer, losing 63-56.
Sophomore guard Ariel Easton knocked down a three-point basket to open the game for SFCC. Iowa Western answered with a 9-0 run to take the lead. The Reivers pushed the advantage to 15-7 with about 12 minutes to go in the first half. The Lady Roadrunners trailed 36-20 at halftime.
Sophomore forward Cheyenne Williams opened the second half with a pair of baskets to trim the deficit to 12 points with just under 19 minutes remaining in the game. SFCC turned up the pressure on the defensive end and cut the lead to six with three minutes remaining, courtesy of a basket from freshman guard Ryneka Church. The Reivers made the plays down the stretch to secure the victory.
Easton and freshman guard Brittany Silas tied for the team lead in scoring with 11 points. Sophomore forward Jallisa Lewis pulled down a team-high nine rebounds. Silas and freshman guard Jermisha Watson tied for the team lead in assists with two, and Watson led the team in steals with four.
