Iowa Western Defeats Lady Roadrunners
The Lady Roadrunners traveled to Council Bluffs, Iowa, Jan. 31 to take on the Iowa Western Reivers in a Region XVI matchup. Iowa Western picked up an 84-71 victory, handing SFCC its first Region XVI loss of the season.
SFCC (14-5, 4-1 in Region XVI) found itself in a hole early. Iowa Western led 14-7 with 13 minutes remaining in the first half. The Reivers extended their lead to 20-9 with 10 minutes left in the half.
SFCC began to mount a comeback when freshman guard Ryneka Church splashed home a three-point basket. The Reivers answered to make the lead 33-21 with about three minutes to go in the first half. SFCC trailed 38-27 at halftime.
“Iowa Western jumped out early,” said Lady Roadrunners Head Coach Kevin Bucher. “When you’re on the road and have a team that’s fighting to get a region win, you know they’re going to throw everything at you. I give Iowa Western credit for that.”
Iowa Western began the second half with a 7-0 run, stretching its advantage to 45-27 with just under 17 minutes remaining. The Lady Roadrunners trimmed the deficit to eight points at 47-39 with a steal and layup from freshman guard Brittany Silas with just over 14 minutes remaining in the game. Silas then knocked down a huge three-point basket to pull her team within five at 47-42.
Iowa Western made the plays down the stretch secure the win. The win was their first in Region XVI play this season.
Sophomore guard Ariel Easton led SFCC in scoring with 17 points. Church contributed 14. Sophomore forward Jallisa Lewis pulled down a team-high seven rebounds and sophomore guard Alexas Brown led the team in assists with two. Lewis also led the team in steals with three.
