Grizzlies Defeat Roadrunners

The Roadrunners lost their first Region XVI contest of the season Jan. 25 at the Fred E. Davis Multipurpose Center. SFCC (12-8, 2-1 in Region XVI) dropped an 89-67 decision to Missouri State University-West Plains.

West Plains got off to a quick start, taking an 8-1 lead. SFCC sophomore guard Fred Wilson knocked down a medium-range jump shot to snap the run. The Roadrunners fought back to tie the game at 16 courtesy of a layup from sophomore wing Antonin Galaya with just over 10 minutes remaining in the half.

A layup from freshman forward Ayo Ojo gave the Roadrunners a 20-18 lead with eight minutes left in the first half. West Plains tied the game, scoring off of an offensive rebound, and took a 36-30 advantage into halftime.

SFCC fought back early in the second half to trim the deficit to one at 39-38 with 17 minutes remaining in the game after freshman guard Kenny Chery grabbed an offensive rebound and got the put back.

West Plains answered with a three-point basket to stretch the deficit to 42-38 with less than 17 minutes remaining. West Plains quickly pushed the lead to 10 at 48-38. The Grizzlies took an 89-65 lead, the biggest by either team, late in the contest and closed out the victory.

Chery led SFCC in scoring with 20 points. Wilson and sophomore guard Alfonzo Houston contributed 10 points each. Sophomore forward Michael Bradley pulled down a team-high nine rebounds in the game.
