Lady Roadrunners Split at Vincennes Classic

The Lady Roadrunners participated in the Vincennes Classic Dec. 9-10 in Vincennes, Ind. SFCC (8-4) defeated Southeastern Illinois College 91-77 on Friday but lost Saturday to host Vincennes University 80-63.

On Friday, SFCC used its full-court pressure defense to grab an early lead over Southeastern Illinois. The Lady Roadrunners recorded 13 steals in the game.

“We did a good job once we started using the full-court press,” said Lady Roadrunners Head Coach Kevin Bucher. “We forced a lot of turnovers but didn’t convert as much as we would have liked. We set the pace in the first half, but let up in the second half and let them back into the game.”

SFCC led 49-32 at halftime. The Lady Roadrunners made the plays they needed in the second half to secure the victory.

Freshman guard/forward Cassandra Moore led three Lady Roadrunners in double-digit scoring with 19 points. Sophomore guard Ariel Easton contributed 18 points. Freshman guard Ryneka Church added 16 points, a team-high three steals and a team-high six assists in the game. Freshman guard Brittany Silas pulled down a team-high eight rebounds.

In Saturday’s game against Vincennes, SFCC used its full-court pressure defense to change the momentum and speed of the game.

“We did a good job wearing them down,” said Bucher. “We had it down to nine points and Vincennes was getting tired, but then we lost focus.”

Forward/center Cheyenne Williams just missed a double double, recording a team-high 20 points and nine rebounds in the game. She also blocked a team-high three shots in the game. Easton contributed 17 points and tied for the team lead in assists with four. Freshman guard Voneisha Harris also contributed four assists in the game.

“This is the toughest schedule we’ve played in a long time,” said Bucher. “We have a younger group of players and it takes a while for them to gel.”

The Lady Roadrunners will return to action Jan. 7 when they take on Penn Valley Community College in Kansas City. Tipoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
