Roadrunners Win Two Games at Marshalltown Classic

The Roadrunners’ strong defense helped them win both their games Nov. 25-26 in the Marshalltown Classic in Marshalltown, Iowa.

On Friday, SFCC (5-6) defeated the Southwestern Community College Spartans from Creston, Iowa, 62-57.

The Roadrunners were down 31-24 at the half. Southwestern took a nine-point lead in the second half, its biggest of the contest. The Roadrunners fought their way back, outscoring the Spartans 38-26 in the second half.

“We had a tough start,” said Roadrunners Head Coach Kevin Thomas. “Southwestern is a tough team. They are patient offensively; they force you to get in a stance and guard.”

Sophomore guard Alfonzo Houston led three Roadrunners in double figures, scoring 16 points and a team-high six assists in the game. Freshman wing Lucas Kidane pulled down a team-high eight rebounds in the game. Sophomore wing Antonin Galaya and sophomore forward Michael Bradley tied for the team lead in steals with two apiece.

SFCC took on the host Marshalltown Community College Tigers on Saturday night. SFCC found itself trailing again at the half 33-30. The Roadrunners fought back to outscore Marshalltown 30-23 and claim the 60-56 victory.

“We got off to a good start,” said Thomas. “We did a good job boxing out and pressuring.”

Kidane led the Roadrunners in scoring with 17 points. Freshman guard Kenny Chery contributed 16 points. Houston added 12 points in the contest and a team-high four steals. Chery pulled down a team-high eight rebounds and a team-high seven assists in the game. Bradley registered three blocked shots.
