Lady Roadrunners Win Two Games at Moberly Classic
The 16th-ranked Lady Roadrunners won both their games in the Moberly Area Community College Classic Nov 25-26.
On Friday, SFCC (7-1) defeated the Westminster College Lady Blue Jays from Fulton 72-47. The Lady Roadrunners shook off a slow start with a 15-0 run to grab a 31-18 lead. They led 34-26 at halftime.
“It took us a while to get going,” said Lady Roadrunners Head Coach Kevin Bucher. “We didn’t play as well as we wanted to, but when we stepped up our defensive pressure it changed the game.”
SFCC opened the second half with an 11-4 run to stretch the lead 45-30. The Lady Roadrunners use their defensive pressure to put the game away.
Sophomore guard Ariel Easton led three Lady Roadrunners in double figures with 21 points. Freshman guard Voneisha Harris contributed 13 points and a team-leading five rebounds. Freshman guard Brittany Silas added 11 points for the game. Sophomore guard Alexas Brown dished out a team-leading six assists. Freshman guard Jermisha Watson registered a team-high four steals.
Saturday, SFCC took on the Rock Valley College Lady Golden Eagles from Rockford, Ill. Rock Valley came into the matchup ranked fourth in NJCAA Division III Women’s Basketball.
SFCC forced three turnovers early in the game but struggled to convert them into points. The Lady Roadrunners led 2-0 with 17 minutes remaining in the first half and held the Lady Golden Eagles scoreless for five minutes to begin the contest.
SFCC freshman guard Ryneka Church made the score 9-1 with a steal and layup. SFCC forced 27 Rock Valley turnovers in the first half and took a 45-20 lead into halftime.
“We were pumped up before the game,” said Bucher. “I think this was a turning point for us. Our team was focused and ready; they wanted to prove they could play better than the day before.”
Brown opened the second half by splashing home a three-point field goal for SFCC. The Lady Roadrunners went on to win the game by a score of 89-44.
Church led the team in scoring with 19 points. Easton and sophomore forward/center Cheyenne Williams contributed 13 points each and Williams also pulled down five rebounds. Sophomore forward Jallisa Lewis tied for the team lead with five rebounds. Harris dished out a team-leading seven assists and Watson added five more. Easton and Lewis tied for the team lead in steals with four.
SFCC will travel to Hutchinson, Kan., Dec. 2-3 to take on a pair of nationally ranked teams. SFCC will play the host Hutchinson Community College on Friday and Seward County Community College on Saturday.
