Lady Roadrunners Bounce Back with Win

The seventh-ranked Lady Roadrunners made it an even split at the 2011 Stone Laser Imaging & 1st Choice Trophies Classic. On Nov. 19, SFCC (5-1) defeated the Wabash Valley College Lady Warriors from Mt. Carmel, Ill., by a score of 71-61.

The Lady Roadrunners found themselves down 12-3 early in the contest. SFCC freshman guard Brittany Silas knocked down a three-point field goal to cut the lead in half. A layup from freshman guard/forward Cassandra Moore capped a 14-0 run to give the Lady Roadrunners a 17-12 lead with just under 11 minutes remaining in the first half. SFCC would never surrender the advantage.

Wabash Valley cut into the lead on several occasions, but each time SFCC had an answer. Moore, sophomore guard Alexas Brown and sophomore guard Ariel Easton were named to the All-Tournament team. Easton was named the tournament’s most valuable player.

“It was a good win,” said Lady Roadrunners Head Coach Kevin Bucher. “It’s been a long time since we’ve lost at home. The players take defending their home court very seriously. Now they need to listen to what the coaching staff is trying to tell them. It comes down to executing from here on out.”

Silas led three Lady Roadrunners in double figures with 20 points. She also tied for the team lead in steals with three. Easton contributed 16 points. She also tied for the team lead in steals with three. Sophomore forward/center Cheyenne Williams added 15 points. Freshman center Chanel Gwynn-Williams pulled down a team-high six rebounds in the game. Brown dished out a team-high four assists. Freshman guard Jermisha Watson contributed three steals for the game.

SFCC returns to action Nov. 25-26 at the Moberly Classic. The Lady Roadrunners will take on Westminster College Junior Varsity from Fulton and Rock Valley College from Rockford, Ill.
