Lady Roadrunners Defeat Lady Statesmen
The 14th-ranked Lady Roadrunners made their first road trip of the season Nov. 9 to take on the Lincoln Trail Lady Statesmen in Robinson, Ill. They used an 8-0 run to open the second half and secure the 87-56 victory.
The Lady Roadrunners (3-0) started the game slowly, leading 11-9 with less than 16 minutes remaining in the first half. They pushed their advantage to 11 points, then turned up the pressure to take a 43-22 lead at halftime.
Sophomore guards Ariel Easton and Alexas Brown opened the second half with back-to-back three-point field goals. SFCC blew the game open from there to notch its first road win of the season.
“We played much better,” said Lady Roadrunners Head Coach Kevin Bucher. “We got out of transition and ran the floor well, which we needed to do. Lincoln Trail went to a zone and we got several three-point shots from that.”
Easton led four Lady Roadrunners in double figures with 25 points and tied for the team lead in steals with three. Brown added 15 points. Freshman center Jamie Buehrig contributed 14 points and a team-high nine rebounds. Freshman guard/forward Cassandra Moore pitched in 11 points. Freshman guard Ryneka Church dished out a team-high four assists in the game. She also tied for the team lead in steals with three. Jermisha Watson also registered three steals in the game. Freshman center Chanel Gwynn-Williams made a team-high three blocks in the contest.
“We got to play everybody,” said Bucher. “That experience is valuable and helps us improve. We’ll take that and get ready for the next game.”
SFCC returns home Nov. 15 to take on the North Arkansas College Lady Pioneers. Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. in the Fred E. Davis Multipurpose Center.
