Lady Roadrunners Defeat Coffeyville
The 14th-ranked Lady Roadrunners made enough plays down the stretch to secure a 75-65 victory Nov. 5 over the Coffeyville Community College Lady Ravens from Coffeyville, Kan., in their second game of the McDonald’s Classic at the Fred E. Davis Multipurpose Center.
The Lady Roadrunners (2-0) found themselves down nine points near the midway point of the first half. They relied on their hard-nosed pressure defense to fight their way back into the game. Sophomore guard Ariel Easton converted a steal into an easy layup to give SFCC the lead at 20-19 with under six minutes to go in the first half. SFCC stretched the lead to 37-27 by the end of the first half.
“We finally started to play some defense,” said Lady Roadrunners Head Coach Kevin Bucher. “Coffeyville jumped on us and played well.”
SFCC came out of the locker room and continued to push the advantage to 46-30. However, Coffeyville closed the deficit to three points with under 10 minutes remaining. A layup from sophomore guard Alexas Brown off a steal from freshman guard/forward Cassandra Moore provided the answer to the run for SFCC. The Lady Roadrunners made the plays down the stretch to secure the victory.
Freshman guard Ryneka Church led three Lady Roadrunners in double-figures with 17 points. She dished out a team-high four assists in the game. Easton contributed 13 points. Freshman guard Brittany Silas added 12 points. Sophomore forward/center Cheyenne Williams pulled down a team-high 10 rebounds. She also led the team in blocked shots with three. Brown and sophomore forward Jallisa Lewis tied for the team lead in steals with four apiece.
The Lady Roadrunners will travel to Robinson, Ill., on Wednesday to take on Lincoln Trail College at 5:30 p.m.
