Roadrunners Win Final Tune-up
The Roadrunners swept a doubleheader 73-67 against the Missouri Valley College Vikings from Marshall Oct. 26 in the annual Highway 65 Shootout at the Fred E. Davis Multipurpose Center.
Missouri Valley knocked down a three-point shot as time expired in the first half to take a 40-39 lead into the break. SFCC trailed 53-48 with just over 10 minutes remaining in the game. The Roadrunners went to a zone defense to work their way back into the contest. Sophomore guard Fred Wilson knocked down a pair of free throws to tie the game at 57 with seven minutes left.
Sophomore guard Alfonzo Houston splashed home a huge three-point basket from the elbow to give SFCC a three-point lead at 60-57 with just over four minutes left. He knocked down another huge three-point shot off a pass from freshman guard Kenny Chery to give the Roadrunners a 65-59 lead. SFCC went on to close out the doubleheader sweep of Missouri Valley 73-67.
“I was proud of our guys,” said Roadrunners Head Coach Kevin Thomas. “When we shoot 28 percent from the field and still win the game, that says something about our team. Our players really fought to get some stops, especially late in the game when we went to our zone defense.”
Houston led three Roadrunners in double figures with 19 points. Chery contributed 16 points and a team-leading eight rebounds. He also dished out a team-high four assists. Sophomore guard Fred Wilson added 10 points, all from the free throw line. Freshman wing Lucas Kidane tied for the team lead in rebounds with eight. Ayo Ojo recorded two blocked shots. Chery and freshman guard D'Angelo Tucker tied for the team lead in steals with three each.
SFCC opens regular season play Nov. 4 in the McDonald’s Classic against Southeastern Illinois College. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m. in the Fred E. Davis Multipurpose Center.
