Lady Roadrunners sweep Heartland Jamboree
The Lady Roadrunners went 3-0 in their first opportunity to scrimmage against other college teams Oct. 9 in the annual Heartland Jamboree on the University of Central Missouri campus in Warrensburg.
The scrimmages consisted of two, 20-minute running-clock halves. SFCC won its first of three scrimmages 41-28 against Des Moines Area Community College.
“We started off a little sloppy,” said Lady Roadrunners Assistant Coach Buck Scheel. “There were a lot of nerves for everybody on the floor. Then we just picked up the intensity defensively. Offensively, I thought we did a good job getting the ball into our post players.”
SFCC had four players with four points each to lead a balanced offensive attack that continued throughout the day. Sophomore Cheyenne Williams contributed six rebounds, sophomore Jallisa Lewis pitched in with four offensive rebounds and freshman Brittany Silas added four steals.
SFCC defeated Kirkwood Community College 48-42 in game number two.
“Kirkwood was a game of runs,” said Scheel. “We would go on a 10-point run, and then we couldn’t score. Then they would go on a 10-point run. It was back and forth the whole game.”
Williams led SFCC with nine points. She also added seven rebounds and two blocks. Sophomore Ariel Easton added seven points and a team-high four steals in the contest. Freshman Cassandra Moore pitched in with six points and freshman Jermisha Watson contributed four offensive rebounds.
“We did a pretty good job taking care of the ball,” said Scheel.“ Our guards did a nice job handling their pressure.”
The Lady Roadrunners finished the sweep with a 32-14 victory over Dodge City Community College.
“We started out pretty sloppy,” said Scheel. “In the second half we turned the page and really started to get after them defensively. Offensively, we started to push the ball much better in the second half.”
Williams led the team in scoring with eight points. Watson added six points. Williams also contributed seven rebounds. Easton led the defensive charge with a team-high five steals.
SFCC will travel to Belleville, Ill., Oct. 16 to take part in the Southwestern Illinois College Jamboree. The Lady Roadrunners will play Southwestern Illinois College, John A. Logan College and Kaskaskia College.
