Booster Club Holds Annual Kickoff Event
The SFCC Roadrunner Booster Club held its annual picnic Sept. 5 at the Fred E. Davis Multipurpose Center. The event serves as the kickoff to the 2011-2012 basketball season.
“Everyone’s excited and the student athletes get a great meal,” said Lady Roadrunners Head Coach Kevin Bucher. “You get to see all the student athletes together for the first time. It’s always an exciting time.”
Both head coaches introduced their teams.
The picnic also serves as the kickoff for the Booster Club’s Adopt a Student Athlete Program, through which community members can “adopt” a student athlete for the upcoming season. The program gives students athletes someone in the community to help them throughout their time at SFCC.
“I’m having a great experience here,” said sophomore Fred Wilson. “Obviously, the adoptive parents program is great since I’m so far away from home. I have someone I can relate to.”
The basketball season will open Nov. 4 with the Lady Roadrunners taking on Vincennes University at 5:30 p.m. The Roadrunners will play Southeastern Illinois College at 7:30 p.m. Both games are part of the McDonald’s Classic and will be played at the Fred E. Davis Multipurpose Center.
“The Booster Club does a lot for our program; without them we wouldn’t be able to get out and recruit like we do,” said Roadrunners Head Coach Kevin Thomas. “We wouldn’t be able to provide some scholarships that we are able to provide. It enables us to do a lot of the extra things that definitely gives us a leg up on the competition.”
