SFCC’s Houston impressive in ‘Top 100’ showcase
Sophomore Alfonzo Houston showed off his basketball skills July 9-10 when he played in Jerry Mullen’s JUCO Top 100 Showcase at Lindenwood University in St. Charles.
More than 300 coaches attended the event, which brought together the top 100 junior college players in the nation. Every high-major conference was represented including the Big 10, Big 12, ACC, SEC, etc., as coaches looked for 2012 recruits.
“I think I can play with the top players in the country in a year,” said Houston. “This was a good experience. It gave me a lot of confidence in my game.”
Roadrunners Head Coach Kevin Thomas said he knew Houston would excel.
“He’s a really athletic player, really good out in the open floor,” said Thomas. “These kinds of events are geared especially for players like Alfonzo. He was able to showcase his ball handling and athleticism.”
Houston was one of two players from Region XVI to make the top 100.
“Several coaches told me they think Alfonzo is a Division I mid-major-plus type player,” said Thomas. “With those kinds of accolades, there will be a lot of people in the gym to see Alfonzo play next year. I’m really excited for him.”
Houston and the Roadrunners will open their 2011-2012 season Nov. 4 against Southeastern Illinois College in the McDonald’s Classic.
