SFCC Lady Roadrunners prepare
for third national tournament appearance
The ninth-ranked State Fair Community College Lady Roadrunners punched their ticket to the NJCAA national tournament for the first time since the 1998-1999 season with an 81-71 Region XVI victory over Jefferson College March 5.
“It’s an honor to be able to take the program to the next step,” said Lady Roadrunners Head Coach Kevin Bucher. “We have a great administration that is very supportive of our athletic program, from the president to Athletic Director Darren Pannier. It’s very exciting to reach the national tournament, and it’s a tribute to the foundation Pannier laid for this team before he stepped down as the women’s head coach last year.”
SFCC (28-4) will find out its opponent March 9 when the tournament bracket is released. The tournament is scheduled for March 15-19 at the Bicentennial Center in Salina, Kan.
The Lady Roadrunners have made two other trips to the national tournament. They made their first appearance in the 1988-1989 season under Head Coach Dale Kimberling. SFCC fell to Hilbert College in the opening round and lost to Orange County Community College in the second game of the double-elimination tournament.
SFCC returned 10 years later in the 1998-1999 season. The Lady Roadrunners fell to Sheridan College in the opening round and lost to the College of Southern Idaho in game two.
This will be the second trip to nationals for Bucher. He knows the challenges that are ahead for SFCC.
“You just wait to see what bracket you’re placed in,” said Bucher. “Then you have to scamper to find as many tapes and as much information as you can about the teams you’re going to play. The first game is the most important because you’ll be able to see the other teams during the week.
“I’m pleased our players will have the chance to experience what the national tournament is like. I think they’ll be very impressed, and I know it will be exciting for them.”
