Lady Roadrunners Advance to Region XVI Tournament Championship

The Lady Roadrunners (27-4) defeated Mineral Area College 90-57 March 4 in a Region XVI semifinal game at Lincoln University in Jefferson City.

Mineral Area took an early 12-7 lead with 13 minutes remaining in the first half. The Lady Roadrunners went to their full-court trapping defense to speed up the tempo of the game. SFCC took the lead in the final minute of the first half, courtesy of a 5-0 run by freshman guard Alexas Brown. Sophomore guard/forward Dahlia Booker stole the ball and dropped it off to Brown for the layup. Brown finished the half by splashing home a three-point shot with the shot clock running down to give SFCC a halftime lead of 34-32.

“That shot changed the momentum of the game,” said Lady Roadrunners Head Coach Kevin Bucher. “I told the team at halftime this is where we’ll make a run, and it was.”

The lead changed hands several times early in the second half. The Lady Cardinals took a 47-44 lead with just under 15 minutes remaining. SFCC freshmen guard/forward Jallisa Lewis completed an old-fashioned three-point play to tie the game at 47.
SFCC once again turned up the pressure on the defensive end to grab a 51-47 lead with 13 minutes remaining. The Lady Roadrunners found a matchup for Booker on the offensive end that they could take advantage of and she didn’t disappoint.

“She was being guarded by a slower player inside,” said Bucher. “Coach Scheel did a great job calling the plays and saw that there was a mismatch.”

The SFCC pressure finally took its toll and the Lady Roadrunners stretched the advantage to 84-55 with just over three minutes remaining in the game. The Lady Roadrunners went on to seal the victory and advance to the championship game for the second time in as many years.

Sophomore forward Ebony Davis led five Lady Roadrunners in double figures with 17 points. Sophomore guard Maci Wisdom contributed 16 points. Sophomore guard Hattie Harris added 12 points. Lewis pitched in with 11 points and Booker added 10. Davis pulled down a team-leading 10 rebounds. She also led the team with three blocked shots. Booker also led the team in steals with five. Sophomore guard Arriana Walker dished out a team-leading four assists in the contest.
