Roadrunners Close Regular Season with Win
The Roadrunners (23-6, 5-3 in Region XVI) hung on for a victory Feb. 26, defeating the Mineral Area College Cardinals 78-73 in Park Hills.
The Roadrunners jumped out to a 20-14 lead, and the Cardinals responded with a run of their own to cut the advantage to one point at 22-21.
SFCC made its first big run of the evening to push the advantage to 34-23, and led 38-29 at halftime.
“Our defense made it hard for them to score,” said Roadrunners Head Coach Kevin Thomas. “We made some plays and shared the basketball well. That’s what helped us get the lead.”
The Roadrunners started the second half with another run and SFCC grabbed a 49-31 lead. Mineral Area trimmed the advantage to 67-65 with four minutes remaining. However, the Roadrunners made the plays down the stretch to secure the victory.
Sophomore guard Dominique Newton led the Roadrunners with 15 points and eight rebounds. Sophomore center Matt Webb and freshman guard Alfonzo Houston contributed 13 points each. Sophomore guard Torres Roundtree added 11 points and a team-leading six assists in the game. Newton added five assists and also had a team-high three steals in the contest.
The Roadrunners will open play in the Region XVI tournament against Moberly Area Community College at 8 p.m. March 4 in Hillsboro.
