Lady Roadrunners Win on Sophomore Night
The fourth-ranked Lady Roadrunners shook off a slow start Feb. 21 to defeat the Penn Valley Community College Scouts 90-65 at the Fred E. Davis Multipurpose Center. The victory completed a 13-0 regular season at home.
“We were sluggish when we started out,” said Lady Roadrunners Head Coach Kevin Bucher. “Our defense wasn’t extending out where we wanted it to; the pressure was not where I like it to be. That’s why they stayed with us early on.”
SFCC (24-3) led 16-6 courtesy of a three-point play from freshman guard/forward Tyler Anderson with about 13 minutes remaining in the half. The Lady Roadrunners extended the lead to 12 on another three-point play. Sophomore guard Arriana Walker found sophomore guard/forward Dahlia Booker in the high post. Booker whipped a pass to sophomore forward Ebony Davis. Davis knocked in a jump shot, was fouled, and made the free throw to put SFCC ahead by 12 points.
SFCC led 44-26 at halftime.
“We went to the trap and got some steals,” said Bucher. “It makes us go faster and picks up the pace.”
Penn Valley trimmed the deficit to 12 points at 50-38 with 14 minutes left in the game. The Lady Roadrunners turned up their defensive pressure once again to put the game away. SFCC led 68-48 with about eight minutes remaining.
Davis registered a double double 27 points and 13 rebound, leading her team in both categories. Sophomore guard Hattie Harris contributed 12 points. Sophomore guard Maci Wisdom and Brown added 11 points each. Walker dished out a team-high seven assists. Brown added five assists and tied for the team lead in steals with four. Harris also added four steals.
