Roadrunners Sweep Reivers
The Roadrunners (20-5) captured their second straight overtime victory Feb. 13 when they defeated the Iowa Western Community College Reivers 76-71.
The Roadrunners found themselves in an early hole, trailing 28-22 with less than six minutes remaining until halftime. Iowa Western pushed the advantage to 14 points, the biggest lead of the game, with three minutes and 24 seconds remaining in the half. SFCC cut the advantage to 10 at 42-32 at halftime.
“I told them if they wanted to win this game they’d better start guarding,” said Roadrunners Head Coach Kevin Thomas. “The second half we did a better job and held them to six points in the first 10 minutes.”
Back-to-back baskets by sophomore guard Torres Roundtree at the high post cut the deficit to six with 15 minutes and 30 seconds remaining in the game. Sophomore Matt Webb made a baseline jumper to cut the deficit to four.
Sophomore forward Travis Jordan was fouled shooting a three-pointer. He went to the free-throw line and knocked down all three free throws to pull SFCC within one at 46-45. SFCC took a two-point lead at 48-46 with 11 minutes and 59 seconds remaining.
Iowa Western again took the lead at 58-52 with six minutes and 30 seconds remaining in the game. Webb knocked down a pair of free throws and a hook shot to get the deficit to two points. Jordan splashed home a three-point shot from the top of the key and was fouled. He converted the four-point play to give SFCC a 60-58 lead with four minutes and 30 seconds remaining.
Iowa Western took a 62-60 lead with just over a minute remaining in the game. SFCC freshman guard Alfonzo Houston picked up a steal and slammed it home on the other end to tie the game with 13.3 seconds remaining. SFCC fouled twice to run the clock down and Iowa Western missed a jump shot to send the game into overtime.
Roundtree made a pair of free throws to give his team a 66-64 lead. The Roadrunners made the free throws down the stretch to secure the victory.
Roundtree and Webb led with 17 points and nine rebounds each. Sophomore Dominique Newton contributed 13 points. Jordan added 12 points. Sophomore Jerel Partlow dished out a team-leading four assists.
The Roadrunners return to action at 7 p.m. Feb. 16 at home when they take on the country’s top-ranked team, the Missouri State University-West Plains Grizzlies.
