Roadrunners Sweep Trailblazers
The Roadrunners (19-5) trailed by six points in overtime but fought back to defeat the Lewis and Clark Trailblazers 82-79 Feb. 12 in Godfrey, Ill.
SFCC (19-5) lost a 10-point lead late in the second half.
“The first 20 minutes of the game were the most uninspired I’ve ever seen,” said Roadrunners Head Coach Kevin Thomas. ”Both teams were sluggish and just went through the motions. We didn't shoot the ball well and we weren't aggressive. They weren't aggressive, either, so the score was 25-25 at the half.”
The Roadrunners built a 10-point lead with five minutes remaining in the second half. The Trailblazers made a three-point shot with six seconds remaining to send the game into overtime tied at 66.
SFCC turned up its defensive pressure to erase the six-point overtime deficit. The Roadrunners forced a turnover. SFCC sophomore guard Dominique Newton found sophomore guard Jerel Partlow for a layup. Lewis and Clark missed a three-point shot. SFCC grabbed the rebound and found Newton, who was ahead of the pack. He was fouled while attempting a layup and made both free throws to give his team the winning margin.
Sophomore guard Torres Roundtree registered a double double with 21 points and 11 rebounds. Sophomore center Matt Webb also contributed a double double with 18 points and a team-high 16 rebounds. Newton added 18 points. Partlow pitched in with 15 points and a team-leading six assists.
