Lady Roadrunners Pick up Key Road Win
The fourth-ranked Lady Roadrunners survived a big road test Feb. 12 when they defeated the Crowder College Lady Riders 82-69 in Neosho.
SFCC (22-2, 8-0 in Region XVI) jumped out to a 24-12 lead with eight minutes and 58 seconds remaining in the first half. They maintained the advantage taking a 37-25 lead into halftime.
“We were aggressive defensively,” said Lady Roadrunners Assistant Coach Buck Scheel. “That allowed us to push the ball. Early in the game we were running our offense correctly, setting good screens and attacking the basket well.”
Crowder opened the second half on a big run. The Lady Riders trimmed the SFCC advantage to one at 56-55 with less than nine minutes remaining in the contest. Lady Roadrunners sophomore guard Maci Wisdom splashed home a huge three-point shot, and then SFCC went on a 13-0 run to put the game away.
“That was a big bucket, because we had several possessions in a row where we couldn't score and we couldn't get stops,” said Scheel.
Sophomore forward Ebony Davis registered a double double with 22 points and 11 rebounds, leading the team in both categories. Freshman guard Alexas Brown contributed 14 points. Sophomore guard Arriana Walker added 13 points and dished out a team-leading six assists and five steals.
SFCC will take on Iowa Western Community College at 6 p.m. Feb. 16 in Council Bluffs, Iowa, in a game that could decide the number one seed for the Region XVI Tournament.
