SFCC Gets Past Jefferson

The ninth-ranked State Fair Lady Roadrunners snapped a 12-game losing streak to 24th-ranked Jefferson College Jan 22, defeating the Lady Vikings 76-65.

SFCC (17-2, 3-0 in Region XVI) started the game with a layup from sophomore guard/forward Dahlia Booker. Jefferson took a 22-14 lead with 12 minutes remaining in the first half. Jefferson used its athleticism to beat SFCC up and down the floor. Jefferson pushed the advantage to 10 points at 24-14 with 11 minutes remaining in the first half.

SFCC began to chip away at the lead, going on a 4-0 run and cut the advantage to six at 24-18 with just over nine minutes left in the half. The Lady Roadrunners extended their defense, picked up their intensity and cut the deficit to 26-21.

Sophomore forward Ebony Davis knocked down a pair of free throws to tie the game at 30 with three minutes and 48 seconds remaining in the half. Jefferson closed the half on a run to take a 42-38 halftime lead.

SFCC’s defense held the Lady Vikings scoreless for the opening five minutes of the second half. Sophomore guard Ciara Leak hit a jump shot to give SFCC the lead with just over 15 minutes remaining. On the Jefferson possession, sophomore guard Arriana Walker picked up a loose ball and laid it in to give SFCC a four-point lead.

“We got the ball to Ebony and she went on a run,” said Lady Roadrunners Head Coach Kevin Bucher. “Jefferson was in foul trouble, so in the second half, our depth helped, and we got some easy buckets.”

Jefferson fought back to grab a one-point lead at 57-56 with seven minutes and 10 seconds remaining in the game. The Lady Roadrunners responded immediately, grabbing a 59-58 lead.

The Lady Roadrunners used their inside game to seal the victory. Davis scored off a rebound and a put back to stretch the lead to 61-58 with six minutes and 20 seconds remaining. SFCC made plays down the stretch to secure the victory.

“I said to myself, ‘We’re going to win it with those sophomores who haven't beaten Jefferson, or we're going to lose it with them,’” said Bucher. “I thought they had the hearts of champions tonight the way they finished the game.”

Leak led three Roadrunners in double figures with 18 points. Davis just missed a double double with 17 points and a team-leading nine rebounds. Booker contributed 10 points. Walker dished out a team-leading seven assists and led the team with four steals.

SFCC will return to the hardwood at 7 p.m. Jan. 26 when the Crowder College Lady Riders come to town.
