Roadrunners’ Upset Bid Falls Short
The Roadrunners (17-4, 2-1 in Region XVI) dropped an 88-81 decision Jan. 25 to the second-ranked Missouri State University-West Plains Grizzlies in West Plains.
SFCC trailed 11-6 early in the contest. A three-pointer by sophomore forward Travis Jordan tied the game at 15. West Plains stretched the lead to 33-20, but the Roadrunners cut the deficit to 41-35 at halftime.
“We were able to settle in and get some stops,” said Roadrunners Head Coach Kevin Thomas. “We got some offensive rebounds and second-chance points. After the Grizzlies started the second half with a run, we had to use our full-court trapping defense to get back in the game.”
West Plains went on a run to open the second half. SFCC answered with an offensive rebound and put back from sophomore forward Filip Toric that trimmed the West Plains lead to six at 54-48. Sophomore center Matt Webb cut the lead to four at 54-50 with 12 minutes remaining in the game.
Jordan knocked down a three-pointer to pull SFCC within two points with just over a minute remaining in the contest. The Roadrunners missed a three-pointer and put back on the next possession and were forced to foul. West Plains made its free throws and grabbed the victory.
Sophomore guard Torres Roundtree led the team with 19 points. Jerel Partlow contributed 14 points. Webb added 12 points and eight rebounds. Freshman guard Alfonzo Houston chipped in with 10 points.
