Roadrunners Defeat Mid-South
The State Fair Community College Roadrunners closed out their portion of the West Plains Classic with a bang Jan.8. The Mid-South Community College Greyhounds from West Memphis, Ark., jumped out to a 4-0 lead. SFCC (14-3) answered with a 14-0 run and cruised to a 90-56 victory.
“Guys really sat down and got in a defensive stance,” said Roadrunners Head Coach Kevin Thomas. “We had guys anticipating and making plays off the ball. I think it definitely frustrated them.”
The Roadrunners used stifling team defense and a pronounced size advantage to stretch the lead to 46-31 at halftime. The
Greyhounds cut the lead to 54-45 in the second half; however SFCC had an answer.
“Matt (Webb) had a great game," said Thomas. “He ended up with 16 rebounds, which was great.”
Sophomore guard Torres Roundtree registered a double double, a game-high 26 points and 11 rebounds. Webb also contributed a double double, 11 points and team-high 16 rebounds. Sophomore guard Dominique Newton had 16 points. Freshman guard Alfonzo Houston added 11 points. Sophomore forward Travis Jordan pitched in with seven rebounds and three charges taken.
SFCC will open Region XVI play at home at 7:30 p.m. Thursday against the Three Rivers Community College Raiders. The Raiders are receiving votes in the NJCAA National Poll.
