Roadrunners Defeat Penn Valley
The State Fair Community College Roadrunners got their second semester off to a good start Jan. 5 when they traveled to Kansas City to take on the Penn Valley Scouts. SFCC (12-3) survived a late Penn Valley run to emerge with an 84-71 victory.
Sophomore guard Dominique Newton knocked down a three-point shot on the first SFCC possession to kick-start the offense. The Roadrunners stretched the lead to 10-2 to start the game.
“I thought our guys did a good job hitting some shots early,” said Roadrunners Head Coach Kevin Thomas. “That contributed to the fast start. Penn Valley missed some stick backs that they probably normally make.”
The Scouts fought back to grab a 17-16 lead. SFCC took a 38-29 lead at halftime. The Roadrunners extended the lead to 15 midway through the second half. The Scouts went on a 10-0 run to cut the lead to five with four minutes and 28 seconds left in the game.
Sophomore center Matt Webb scored on the next possession, followed by another big basket from Newton. The Roadrunners knocked down their free throws down the stretch to secure the road victory.
“Matt got the ball on the block and made an aggressive move, got fouled, got the bucket and made the free throw,” said Thomas. “Newton came down, was able to penetrate, pull up, and hit a tough shot.”
Newton and sophomore forward Filip Toric tied for the team lead in scoring with 13 points each. Webb registered a double double 12 points and a team-leading 15 rebounds. Freshman guard Alfonzo Houston and sophomore guard Torres Roundtree added 11 point each. Houston also dished out a team-leading five assists in the game.
