SFCC Lady Roadrunners to play Penn Valley
The State Fair Community College Lady Roadrunners will open the second half of their season Jan. 5 when they take on the Penn Valley Scouts in Kansas City. Head Coach Wakisha Briggs leads the Scouts, who come into the match-up with an 8-5 record on the season.
“I think they're going to try and make it an up-tempo game," said Lady Roadrunners Head Coach Kevin Bucher. “They may press some. I think they’ll probably play some zone.”
The Scouts have four players averaging double figures in scoring. Sophomore point guard Rician Walker leads with 17 points, and also leads the team in steals with 3.25 per game. Sophomore point guard Leah Smith contributes 16.5 points per game. Smith also has knocked down a team-leading 10 three-point shots and dishes out a team-leading three assists per game.
Freshman shooting guard KeAla Jones adds 12.5. Freshman center Ejehi Ehovon averages a double double with 11.1 points per game and a team-leading 10 rebounds per game.
“We are just going to play good man-to-man defense, try to wear them down and see if they can still score in the second half,” said Bucher.
SFCC (13-2) defeated Penn Valley last year when the Lady Roadrunners won 85-75 at home. Freshmen Maci Wisdom and Ciara Leak contributed 16 points each. Leak also contributed a team-leading seven assists and four steals. Freshman Hattie Harris added 12 points, four rebounds and four assists.
“It’s going to be important for us to come back (from break) and start to get back in shape,” said Bucher. “We’re going to have to use a lot of players and get after them defensively, especially in the half court. We'll probably put on some full-court pressure as well.”
The Lady Roadrunners will return home on Jan.13 to open Region XVI play against Three Rivers Community College at 5:30 p.m. The Roadrunners will play Three Rivers at 7:30 p.m.
