Roadrunners Close First Semester with Win
The State Fair Community College Roadrunners salvaged a split at the Forest Park Classic Dec. 11, defeating the Mid-Continent University Cougars junior varsity from Mayfield, Ky., 101-45.
SFCC (11-3) shook off a slow start to lead 20-8 with 11 minutes and 30 seconds left in the half. The Roadrunners led 42-24 at halftime.
“It's funny how that works; sometimes when you make shots you play a little harder on the defensive end,” said Roadrunners Head Coach Kevin Thomas. “That was the case Saturday.”
The Roadrunners went on a 14-3 run to open the second half and put the game away. SFCC used a fast start to secure the win.
“We were able to get some guys out in the passing lanes and get some deflections,” said Thomas. “We got some easy buckets in transition.”
Sophomores Jerel Partlow and Dominique Newton led the team with 23 points apiece. Freshman Alfonzo Houston contributed 18 points. Sophomore Erik Hunter added 11 points.
“In my opinion, there are two games we would love to have back,” said Thomas. “I think if we played the right way, with the right intensity, we definitely could be 13-1 right now. Hopefully, second semester, guys will keep making shots and our defense will become a little bit tougher.”
SFCC will return to game action at 7 p.m. Jan. 5 when the Roadrunners will travel to Kansas City to take on Penn Valley Community College.
