Roadrunners Fall to Forest Park

The State Fair Community College Roadrunners traveled to St. Louis Dec. 10 to take part in the Forest Park Classic. SFCC fell to host St. Louis Community College-Forest Park 102-95.
The Roadrunners (10-3) came out of the box slow. The Highlanders controlled most of the first half. Forest Park led 22-16 with 11 minutes and 11 seconds remaining in the first half. The Highlanders extended their lead to 16 late in the half.
“Forest Park just whipped us on the offensive glass,” said Roadrunners Head Coach Kevin Thomas. “They were two or three steps quicker than us all over the floor.”
The Roadrunners made a run to cut the lead to 10 at halftime. They trailed the Highlanders 51-41. A layup by freshman Alfonzo Houston cut the deficit to six points. However, the Highlanders answered with a quick 5-0 run with just under 10 minutes to go in the game.
SFCC finally cut the deficit to three with six minutes and 47 seconds remaining. Houston gave the Roadrunners an 80-79 lead. Sophomore Travis Jordan took a charge on the next defensive possession.
Forest Park tied the game at 84 with five minutes left. The Roadrunners refused to go away; Houston made a pair of free throws and sophomore Dominique Newton scored a layup to put his team up four points.
Forest Park cut the lead to one with a three-point shot at 90-89. The Highlanders tied the game at 90 with a free throw. Forest Park grabbed a one-point lead with 39 seconds left. The Highlanders knocked down a huge three pointer to seal the victory. Forest Park iced the game at the free-throw line.
Houston tallied a career-high 37 points to lead the Roadrunners. Sophomore Dominique Newton contributed 26 points. Sophomore Jerel Partlow added 15. Sophomore Matt Webb registered a double double with 10 points and 11 rebounds for the game.
