Roadrunners Fall to Southeastern Illinois
The State Fair Community College Roadrunners suffered a tough 70-69 loss Dec. 4 to the Southeastern Illinois Hawks in Harrisburg, Ill.
SFCC (9-2) jumped out to a 16-7 lead courtesy of a three-point shot by freshman Alfonzo Houston. The Roadrunners took a 40-34 lead into halftime.
“We got up by 14 in the first half,” said Roadrunners Head Coach Kevin Thomas. “We thought guys were playing really hard and doing some good things. We had players making shots, and all of the sudden, the intensity level just dropped.”
Southeastern Illinois began the second half with a 6-0 run to tie the game at 40 with 17 minutes and 40 seconds remaining. The Hawks opened a seven-point lead with 12 minutes and 48 seconds to go in the second half.
SFCC proved it wouldn't go down without a fight. Sophomore Jerel Partlow knocked down consecutive three-pointers to put the Roadrunners ahead 60-56 at the seven-minute, six-second mark of the half.
The Hawks went on a 7-0 run with four minutes to go in the game. The Roadrunners cut the deficit to one point with 17 seconds remaining, but got no closer.
“It just comes back to toughness,” said Thomas. “Tough teams are able to get stops when they need them and we were unable to do that.”
Sophomore Matt Webb registered a double double with 18 points and 11 rebounds. Partlow contributed 15 points and a team-leading five assists. Sophomore Filip Toric added 10 points and six rebounds.
