Lady Roadrunners Sweep Rend Lake
The 15th-ranked State Fair Community College Lady Roadrunners defeated Rend Lake College from Ina, Ill., for a third time this season, winning 101-42 at the Three Rivers Classic Dec. 4.
The first two contests had been close games. However, with the Lady Warriors missing their top two scorers, SFCC (12-2) used its pressure defense and transition offense to secure the victory.
The Lady Roadrunners jumped out to a 20-9 lead with less than 14 minutes to go in the first half. They took a 57-21 lead into halftime.
“We really pushed the girls to keep attacking the hoop,” said Lady Roadrunners Assistant Coach Buck Scheel. “We worked the ball around and got a lot of inside looks, and wanted to make sure our girls were working hard and not looking past anybody.”
Sophomore Ebony Davis led five Lady Roadrunners in double-figure with 19 points. She also tied for the team-high eight rebounds. Freshman TyJae' Chenevert pitched in with 11 points and eight rebounds. Freshman Mariah Duke, sophomore Arriana Walker and sophomore Maci Wisdom each added 10 points for the game. Sophomore Jallisa Lewis pulled down six rebounds.
Sophomore Ciara Leak and Walker shared team-high honors with five assists and three steals apiece. Freshman Alexas Brown also had three steals. Davis led the team with four blocked shots and Chenevert registered one blocked shot for the game.
The Lady Roadrunners will have two weeks off from competition before returning to action at 2 p.m. Dec. 19 against Southeastern Illinois in Harrisburg, Ill.
“We’re going to break up our practice schedule,” said Scheel. “We want to make sure that when we're in the gym, we’re getting in good quality time, not just going through the motions. We need to improve on a lot of things before our game against Southeastern.”
