Roadrunners Remain Unbeaten
The State Fair Community College Roadrunners picked up their seventh win of the season Nov. 23, defeating North Central Missouri College 89-69.
SFCC (7-0) got off to an 8-3 lead to open the game. North Central fought back and took a 15-9 lead with just under 12 minutes left in the first half.
“We struggled with intensity tonight; it wasn't a very good performance,” said Roadrunners Head Coach Kevin Thomas. “I'm not sure if our guys were looking ahead to the next game or if their minds were on Thanksgiving. Our team didn't show up tonight ready to play.”
The Roadrunners fought back and grabbed a 23-21 lead with five minutes and 11 seconds left until halftime, then took a 34-29 lead into halftime. The momentum seemed to change when SFCC got the ball inside to sophomore Matt Webb.
“Matt was able to finish around the bucket,” said Thomas. “He ended up with 23, and had about six rebounds. I thought we did do a good job of getting him the ball. He was able to score pretty much at will around the basket.”
SFCC took control of the game on back-to-back three-point plays from sophomores Torres Roundtree and Thomas Orr to make the score 50-40. A three-point shot by sophomore Erik Hunter extended the lead to 11 at 53-42 with 11 minutes and 20 seconds left in the game. SFCC blew open the game from there for the 89-69 win.
Roundtree and Webb finished the game with a team-high 23 points each. Roundtree just missed a triple double with a team-leading nine rebounds and nine assists. He also went 14-15 from the free throw line. Freshman Alfonzo Houston contributed 21 points for the Roadrunners.
