Lady Roadrunners Defeat North Central Lady Pirates
The 17th-ranked State Fair Community College Lady Roadrunners overcame a slow start offensively to defeat the North Central Missouri College Lady Pirates 76-46 Nov. 23.
The Lady Roadrunners used their trademark defensive pressure to take a 20-19 lead with just under 10 minutes remaining in the first half.
“I thought our defensive pressure and intensity was very good,” said Lady Roadrunners Head Coach Kevin Bucher. “I thought we were dead coming out. I could tell even in our warm-ups. I was hoping it would click in, because they shoot too well and we knew we had to wear (North Central) down.”
The Lady Roadrunners extended their lead to 34-19 when Sophomore Arriana Walker stole the ball and converted it on the other end. SFCC (7-2) took a 43-22 lead into halftime. The Lady Roadrunners forced 17 turnovers in the half.
“I was very pleased with our subs from about the eight-minute mark to the end the first half,” said Bucher. “I thought it was a good team effort in the first half.”
SFCC continued to use its defense to spread out the margin and win. The Lady Roadrunners’ defense forced 26 turnovers for the game.
“We use a lot of people to wear teams down,” said Bucher. “Any given night, somebody steps up. I thought Tyler (Anderson) played exceptionally well tonight. I thought Maci (Wisdom) had a great game, too. Of course, Ciara (Leak) played well. Jallisa Lewis had another good game battling the big kids inside.”
Leak led three Lady Roadrunners in double figures with 17 points and four assists. Anderson contributed 15 points and Wisdom added 13. Walker and Ebony Davis tied for the team lead with six rebounds. Wisdom, Anderson and Mariah Duke recorded three steals each.
