Lady Roadrunners Defeat Southeastern Illinois
The seventh-ranked State Fair Community College Lady Roadrunners used a big second half run Nov. 6 to blow open a close game and defeat the Southeastern Illinois Falcons 78-49 in the McDonald's Classic.
“I thought our guards did a great job keeping the Southeastern point guard out,” said Lady Roadrunners Head Coach Kevin Bucher. “They kept her from getting into the flow of the offense with the other players. I'm very pleased with our defense.”
Southeastern Illinois employed a 1-2-2 zone defense trying to slow down the SFCC offense. The Lady Roadrunners (3-0) used their speed and quickness to wear down their opponents, taking a 39-25 lead into halftime.
Sophomore Ciara Leak led four Lady Roadrunners in double figures with 18 points, plus a team-high four steals. Sophomore Ebony Davis contributed 15 points and sophomore Tatianna Washington added 14 points. Sophomore Dahlia Booker pitched in with 12 points and a team-leading seven rebounds. Sophomore Arriana Walker dished out a team-leading four assists.
“It was a team effort," said Bucher. “I thought everybody came out on the floor, picked us up and did a great job.”
SFCC will travel Nov. 12-13 to Chipola College in Marianna, Fla., for the Collegiate Girls Basketball Report Classic. The Lady Roadrunners will take on Northwest Florida State College at 4 p.m. Friday and Chipola College at 8 p.m. Saturday.
