Roadrunners Defeat Southeastern Illinois
The State Fair Community College Roadrunners closed out the McDonald's Classic Nov. 6 with a 68-65 over the Southeastern Illinois College Falcons. SFCC saw a 15-point lead cut to one point in the final seconds of the game.
The Roadrunners got a big defensive stop from Sophomore Filip Toric with 15.8 seconds to go. Sophomore Dominique Newton made two free throws to stretch the lead to three with 11.3 seconds remaining. Southeastern Illinois missed a contested three-point shot. The Roadrunners went over on their next possession, but Southeastern Illinois was called for traveling as time expired.
“It’s a W in the books, but we have a long way to go before we consider ourselves a team,” said Roadrunners Head Coach Kevin Thomas. “Defensively, we just allowed Southeastern Illinois to lay the ball on the square all night long.”
Newton led four Roadrunners in double-figures with 15 points. He also tied for the team lead in assists, dishing out three. Freshman Alfonzo Houston contributed 11 points. Sophomore Matt Webb added 10 points. Sophomore Travis Jordan pitched in with 10 points and a team-leading six rebounds. Toric also added three assists.
“In the preseason we shot the ball well; this weekend we didn't,” said Thomas. “We have to get guys to make open shots. We've got to get better defensively."
SFCC will hit the road for the first time this season on Tuesday, Nov. 9, when the Roadrunners take on Fort Scott Community College at 7 p.m.
