Lady Roadrunners Ranked Seventh in Preseason Poll
The expectations are once again high for the State Fair Community College Lady Roadrunners basketball team. State Fair was ranked seventh, the highest preseason ranking in the history of the program, in the NJCAA Preseason Poll released on Monday, October 25th.
“It's something that Coach Pannier and I have been building for several years. It's one of those things that you like to have the recognition, at the same time, like I told the players we’re not there. There's still a lot of work to be done… Now you have a bull's-eye that everyone is after. You have to come out ready to practice every day. You have to come out ready to play every day," said Lady Roadrunners Head Coach Kevin Bucher.
The Lady Roadrunners return six players that started games last year. Honorable mention All-American Ciara Leak is the teams leading returning scorer at 12.7 points per game. She also added 5.3 assists and 5.2 rebounds per game. Leak played in 30 games for SFCC last year. Those numbers earned her first team All-Region 16 honors. She also participated in the 2010 NJCAA All-Star Game over the summer.
Arriana Walker played in 31 games last year for the Lady Roadrunners. She averaged 6.1 points per game and 3.3 rebounds. She dished out a team-leading 5.5 assists per game in her freshman campaign.
Tatianna Washington earned Preseason All-American honors in 2009. She averaged 6.6 points and 3.2 rebounds per game for State Fair. Washington played in 31 games during her freshman season.
Dahlia Booker played in 32 games as a freshman for State Fair. Booker averaged 8.9 points and a team-leading 7.1 rebounds per game.
Hattie Harris played in 31 games last season. Harris averaged 6.2 points, 4.7 rebounds, and 1.7 assists for State Fair.
Maci Wisdom played in 28 games as a freshman for the Lady Roadrunners. Wisdom averaged 7.5 points, 2.6 assists, and 2.1 rebounds per game last season.
State Fair added nine newcomers to the mix in the off-season. This group is highlighted by Division I transfer Ebony Davis. Davis played 29 games at Indiana University Purdue University-Indianapolis, starting in 14. She averaged 4.6 points, 5.1 rebounds, and one blocked shot per game.
The Lady Roadrunners will see two other teams currently ranked in the poll. State Fair will take on No.11 Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College at the Moberly Classic on November 27th. The Lady Roadrunners will host Region 16 rival No.10 Jefferson College on January 22nd. State Fair will travel to Jefferson College at Hillsboro, Missouri on February 23rd.
“We are very pleased to have the ranking. I know the girls are excited, at the same time, I think our experience is a big factor that is going to help motivate and keep everyone hungry," said Bucher.
The Lady Roadrunners will open the season at home on November 1st against Rend Lake College. Tipoff is scheduled for 6 P.M.
