Lady Roadrunners Capture Three of Four at West Central Shootout

The State Fair Lady Roadrunners got a chance to participate in a scrimmage in front of the home fans on Sunday, October 24th. State Fair took on Avila University and William Woods University. The Lady Roadrunners emerged victorious three of the halves.

State Fair started fast jumping out to a 6-1 lead with 16 minutes left to go in the first half. They would stretch the lead to 10-3 with 14 minutes and 51 seconds left on the clock.  Avila would make a run to slice into the deficit, but the Lady Roadrunners would hang on to capture the first half 25-18.

"I thought we jumped out pretty quick, our intensity and our speed were there, which got us out to a good lead. When we rotate in certain spots, we have a lot of young players who are still learning the game," said Lady Roadrunners Head Coach Kevin Bucher.

State Fair would capture the second half by a score of 26-12. Sophomore Dahlia Booker led State Fair in scoring with 14 points. Sophomore Ciara Leak contributed 10 points for the game. Freshman Tyler Anderson, Leak, Sophomore Hattie Harris and Freshman Aubree Carr pulled down four rebounds each. Leak, Booker and Harris dished out a team-leading two assists each.

State Fair would take on William Woods University in game two of the scrimmage. William Woods would jump out to an early 11-6 lead with 11 minutes and 18 seconds left in the first half.  The Owls would control the tempo for much of the game, forcing the game to be played in the half court.

The Lady Roadrunners would go on a 6-0 run to cut the deficit to one, with just more than four minutes and 30 seconds left in the half. State Fair found themselves down two points in the waning seconds of the game when Booker hit a huge three-point shot from the elbow to secure a 17-16 win over William Woods in half number one.

"I thought we played better defense. I thought we stepped out and covered some of their shots… We finally blocked out a little bit better," said Bucher.

The second half looked like a carbon copy of the first. State Fair found themselves down once again, this time by a score of 17-12 with 11 minutes and 13 seconds left to go in the half. The Lady Roadrunners cut the lead to two at 25-23 with one minute and 20 seconds left to go in the game.

William Woods missed a pair of free throws with 24.8 seconds to play. The Lady Roadrunners had two opportunities to win the game on a possession, but neither shot would fall. The Lady Owls would win the half 25-23.

"There are a lot of things to look at from this game, that we can hopefully get better on," said Bucher.

Sophomore Arriana Walker led the offensive attack with 10 points. Booker contributed nine. Sophomore Ebony Davis, Booker and freshman Anya Trass grabbed three rebounds each. Walker and Carr dished out a team-leading two assists apiece.

State Fair will take on Missouri Valley College in the annual Highway 65 Shootout on Wednesday. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 P.M. in Marshall.
