Roadrunners Win Two of Three Halves at Columbia College
The State Fair Community College Roadrunners hit the road on Wednesday night October 20th to take on Columbia College in a scrimmage. State Fair took a 38-30 lead into halftime.
"I thought our team shot the ball pretty well. We had several guys that made shots. I think offensively we were doing some good things, and I thought we made a lot of improvement defensively in the first half. We still had some mistakes, but I thought our effort was really good," said Roadrunners Head Coach Kevin Thomas.
Columbia College would respond in the second half, outscoring State Fair 53-47. According to Thomas, the Cougars turned up the intensity to secure the win in the second half.
“In the second half, defensively we just didn't do things right... our guys didn't do the little things offensively correct. To our guy’s credit, we got down by probably 15 or 18 points in the second half, but our guys climbed back and made it a five-point game,” said Thomas.
Sophomore Jerel Partlow led three Roadrunners in double figures with 24 points, including shooting six for 11 from beyond the arc. Sophomore Torres Roundtree contributed 12 points. Sophomore Titus Mims added 10 and a team-leading five rebounds. Freshman Alfonzo Houston dished out a team-high six assists in the game.
The two teams played the third half of basketball to round out the evening. State Fair won that half 40-24. Sophomore Thomas Orr led the team in scoring with seven points. Sophomore Erik Hunter pitched in with six points. Freshman Tyler Wilson and Houston recorded five each. Wilson also pulled down a team-leading four rebounds. Freshman Carvel Claggett, Wilson, and Houston all tied for the team leader in assists with two.
State Fair will travel to the Johnson County Jamboree on Sunday, October 24th. The Roadrunners will take on Hutchinson Community College and Neosho County Community College.
