Roadrunners Ink Seven for 2010-2011

The State Fair Roadrunners basketball team has announced the signing of seven student-athletes who will join the team in 2010-2011.

Below is some biographical information about each student-athlete and a quote from Roadrunner Head Coach Kevin Thomas.

Carvel Claggett

6’0 * 190 * Guard

Kansas City, Mo. * Winnetonka High School

Claggett played for head coach Derek Howard at Winnetonka High School in Kansas City.  He averaged 23 points and four rebounds a game.  Claggett earned all-conference, all-district and all-metro first-team honors.

"Carvel is a strong guard, who penetrates well, and has a good midrange game, says Thomas.  As his point guard skills improve, he will make our team much better."

Alfonzo Houston

6’3 * 185 * Guard

Cleveland Heights, Ohio  *Cleveland Heights High School

Houston played for head coach Barry Egan at Cleveland Heights. Houston averaged 19.4 points, seven assists, and six rebounds.  He was named All-Northeast Ohio first-team. Houston was also named the 12th best player in Ohio.

"Alfonzo is a 6’3 guard who can handle the ball and slash, said Thomas. As his perimeter shot improves, he has a chance to be a really good player."

Erik Hunter

6’3 * 190 * Guard

Flower Mound, Tx. * Collin College (Plano, Tx.)

Hunter is a transfer from Collin College in Plano, Texas, where he shot 44 percent from beyond the three-point arc. Hunter had an outstanding prep career at Flower Mound High School, where he played for head coach Charles Freet. Hunter averaged 16 points, five rebounds and two assists per game, while helping to lead his team to a 21-11 record. He was named first-team all-conference and most valuable player for his efforts. Hunter was also nominated for the top 25 scorers in the Dallas area in high school. “Erik has a chance to be really solid for us... He is a big guard, that can shoot and slash to the rim," said Thomas

Verdis Lee

6’1 * 165 * Guard

Fulton, Mo. *Fulton High School

Lee played for head coach Darrell Davis at Fulton High School.  Lee averaged 20 points, eight rebounds, four assists and two steals. He earned all-conference and all-district honors three times. As senior, he helped lead his team to a 20-7 record. As a senior he earned first-team all-area, second-team all-state from the media and first-team MBCA all-state honors.

"Verdis has a chance to be a good player. He's a very good athlete that jumps well for his size. As his perimeter shot and ball handling improve, he will become a great player,” said Thomas.

Thomas Orr

6’5 * 190 * Guard/Forward

Hutto, Tx. Panola College * (Carthage, Tx.)

Orr is a transfer from Panola College in Carthage, Texas. Orr averaged 7.5 points in his one season at Panola.  Orr played his prep basketball at Hutto High School for Gant Caraway. Orr, a true student-athlete, also picked up academic all-state honors. He broke the school record for three-pointers made and became the all-time leading scorer at his high school.

"Thomas will be a very good player for us. He will be able to stretch the defense with his shooting ability. He also could be a lockdown defender with his athleticism," said Thomas.

Sven Sabljak

6’7 * 240 * Forward/Center

Zagreb, Croatia * Wesleyan Christian Academy *(Thomasville, NC)

Sabljak played for head coach Keith Gatlin at Wesleyan Christian. He averaged eight points and six rebounds, while helping to lead his team to a 19-11 record last year.

"Sven is a big wide-bodied kid who rebounds hard and can score around the basket.  He has a chance to help immediately after the departure of Brandon Scaife, Tim Kiewel and Bosko Ognenovski,” said Thomas.

Dominic Sriwichian

6’7 * 220 * Forward/Center

Bangkok, Thailand * Bangkok Christian College

"Dominic is a big, that runs well and can score around the basket.  He plays hard and has a chance to be a really good player. Dominic played high school ball in Thailand where he led his team to a national championship three years ago. He gives us some much-needed size up front to go along with Matt and Sven," said Thomas.
