Lady Roadrunners Start Quick, Claim Region Championship

The Lady Roadrunners are headed to the NJCAA national tournament March 15-19 in Salina, Kan., after defeating the Jefferson College Lady Vikings 81-71 March 5 in the Region XVI championship game at Lincoln University in Jefferson City.

Sophomore forward Ebony Davis got the Lady Roadrunners off to a quick 2-0 start, opening the game with a layup. SFCC (28-4) extended the lead to 13-0 before Jefferson could get on the board.

“We needed to be the aggressors,” said Lady Roadrunners Head Coach Kevin Bucher. “We needed to come out and set the pace, and our girls did that.”

Sophomore guard Arriana Walker picked up one of her team-leading seven steals and took it the distance for a layup to give her team a 20-6 lead with 12 minutes remaining in the first half. Jefferson tied the game at 24-24 with just five minutes left in the first half. The Lady Roadrunners answered with a 12-3 run to close the half with a 36-27 advantage.

Sophomore guard Maci Wisdom opened the second half with a pair of free throws to extend the lead to 11. Jefferson trimmed the lead to five at 38-33 with 17 minutes remaining. Davis answered again with a layup to extend the lead back to seven, and then Jefferson tied the game again at 41.

“The girls didn’t lose their composure,” said Bucher. “They stayed with the plan and kept working at it. I’m so proud of them.”

Freshman guard Alexas Brown splashed home a big three-point shot to give SFCC a 65-61 lead with four minutes and 23 seconds remaining. SFCC got a huge defensive stop with one minute remaining to lead 73-68. SFCC forced a turnover with 53.6 seconds remaining. Walker was fouled on the next possession, stepped to the free-throw line and knocked down both free throws to extend SFCC’s lead to 75-68 with 42 seconds remaining.

Walker picked up yet another steal to seal the victory. Jefferson was forced to foul Davis. Davis made both free throws. SFCC hit four more free throws to finish the game.

Davis led SFCC with 27 points and 11 rebounds, leading the team in both categories and shooting 19 of 22 from the free-throw line. Booker contributed 14 points and Walker added 11 points. Sophomore guard Hattie Harris dished out a team-high four assists.

Davis and sophomore guard Ciara Leak were named first team All-Region XVI. Booker and Walker were named second team All–Region XVI. Bucher was named Region XVI Coach of the Year.
