Recap:

Roadrunners Fall in Region XVI Championship Game

The Roadrunners ended their season March 5 with an 87-68 loss to the top-ranked Missouri State University-West Plains Grizzlies at Jefferson College in Hillsboro. SFCC (24-7) placed second in Region XVI.

West Plains jumped out to an early 14-7 lead. Sophomore forward Travis Jordan knocked down a three-point shot to trim the deficit to four at 14-10. The Grizzlies extended their advantage to 22-16 with 11 minutes remaining.

The Roadrunners answered with an 11-4 run to take a 27-26 lead courtesy of a layup from sophomore guard Torres Roundtree. West Plains took back the lead on its next possession.

“We got some turnovers,” said Roadrunners Head Coach Kevin Thomas. “Our defense stepped up a little bit. They started the game with a nice run and had us back on our heels. We countered with a run of our own.”

The Roadrunners trailed 37-33 at halftime. SFCC cut the deficit to 37-35 early in the second half, but never came any closer. The Grizzlies stretched the lead to 64-54 with six minutes remaining.

Sophomore center Matt Webb registered a double double in his final game as a Roadrunner with 22 points and 15 rebounds, leading the team in both categories. Freshman Alfonzo Houston contributed 13 points. Roundtree added 11 points and a team-high five assists in his final game at SFCC. Webb, Roundtree and sophomore guard Dominique Newton were named All-Region XVI.

“They’ve all done good things,” said Thomas. “Matt Webb has improved so much since he first arrived on campus. Travis Jordan has improved tremendously. When he first got here, his defense was a liability, because he couldn’t guard anybody off the bounce. However, he was our best defender this year.

“Dominique Newton improved tremendously defensively; he could always shoot and score. He provided us with some good leadership this year. Filip Toric got a lot tougher in his time here. He was able to grab a lot of key rebounds for us. Torres Roundtree had a great year for us. He rebounded the ball and provided us with some toughness and scoring.

“Jerel Partlow shot the ball well for us this year, and Erik Hunter played some really good basketball for us the last five games before the tournament.”
