The Roadrunners defeated the Penn Valley Community College Scouts 99-75 Feb. 21 to close out the home portion of their regular season.
Sophomore center Matt Webb opened the game with a hook shot to give SFCC a 2-0 lead it never surrendered. SFCC (22-6) extended the lead to 10-4 with 17 minutes remaining in the first half and took a 47-37 lead into halftime.
“We did a good job at the beginning of the game,” said Roadrunners Head Coach Kevin Thomas. “Our pressure was good. Dominique Newton, Erik Hunter and Travis Jordan showed strong effort the first 10 minutes.”
Penn Valley cut the lead to eight early in the second half. Newton splashed home a three-point shot to make the score 50-39 with about 19 minutes remaining in the game.
Penn Valley cut the deficit to five at 54-49. The Scouts got as close as four points, but Webb snagged an offensive rebound and put back, making the score 58-52. SFCC stretched the lead to 80-61 with less than eight minutes to go.
Webb led five Roadrunners in double figures with 26 points and 13 rebounds. He led the team in both categories.
“Matt was able to get whatever he wanted around the bucket,” said Thomas. “Our guys did a good job finding him and sharing the basketball. We got a lot of easy buckets.”
