Roadrunners Complete Homecoming Sweep

The Roadrunners (21-6, 4-3 in Region XVI) fought off a late charge from the Moberly Area Community College Greyhounds Feb. 19 to win SFCC’s Homecoming game 81-78. SFCC has 21 wins so far this season, the most in more than a decade.

Sophomore guard Erik Hunter kick-started the Roadrunners offensively, scoring SFCC’s first 10 points. Hunter gave SFCC a 10-4 advantage with 13 minutes left in the first half.

“His energy level was great,” said Roadrunners Head Coach Kevin Thomas. “He did a great job making shots and our players did a good job finding him. If it hadn’t been for Hunter, we probably would have been down 15 in the first half.”

Moberly battled back to tie the game at 17. The Greyhounds took the largest lead of the game at 11 points with under five minutes remaining in the half. SFCC trailed 37-32 at halftime.

Sophomore forward Travis Jordan got the Roadrunners back to within one, knocking down a three-pointer to cut the lead to 45-44. The Roadrunners got a stop on the defensive end. Sophomore center Matt Webb gave SFCC a one-point lead with a hook shot from the left baseline.

Moberly fought back to grab a four-point lead. SFCC sophomore guard Dominique Newton knocked down a two-point shot to give SFCC a one-point advantage, 51-50, with 13 minutes remaining. Newton stretched the lead to four when he knocked down a three-pointer from the top of the key. Newton finished his personal 7-0 run when he picked a loose ball off the steal from freshman guard Alfonzo Houston and converted a layup to give his team a 56-50 lead at the 11-minute mark.

Moberly cut the Roadrunners’ advantage to three points, then the Roadrunners pushed the lead to 65-59 with just under six minutes left.

Later in the game, SFCC had 10-point leads twice. Moberly made two free throws with 8.8 seconds left to make it a one-point game, 79-78. Hunter was fouled on the ensuing SFCC possession. He buried both free throws to give SFCC a three-point lead. Moberly missed a three-point shot at the buzzer to give the Roadrunners the win.

“We didn’t finish the game off right,” said Thomas. “We had some careless turnovers; we didn’t step up and make free throws, which would have helped us win the game more comfortably.”

Newton led the Roadrunners with 22 points. Hunter contributed 19 points and a team-high eight rebounds. Webb added 12 points. Sophomore guard Torres Roundtree dished out a team high five assists for the game.
