Roadrunners Defeat Trailblazers
The State Fair Community College Roadrunners (17-3, 2-0 in Region XVI) picked up their 17th win Jan. 22 when they defeated the Lewis and Clark Community College Trailblazers 85-65.
SFCC jumped out to an early 9-0 lead and never looked back. The Roadrunners stretched the advantage to 18-5 thanks to a three pointer by sophomore forward Filip Toric with 12 minutes remaining in the first half.
“Guys made shots and we were able to get some stops early,” said Roadrunners Head Coach Kevin Thomas. “I thought our intensity was good at the beginning of the game, but then it waned. We boosted it midway through the second half, but it waned again near the end.”
Lewis and Clark responded, cutting the SFCC advantage to six at 20-14 with just less than 10 minutes remaining in the half. Sophomore guard Jerel Partlow knocked down a big three-pointer to extend SFCC’s lead to 37-26 with three minutes and 42 seconds remaining. SFCC took a 43-29 lead into halftime.
Lewis and Clark cut the lead to nine at 55-46 with a little more than 15 minutes remaining in the game. SFCC came back down the floor and answered with a three pointer from sophomore guard Erik Hunter.
SFCC put the game away, grabbing a 25-point lead late in the second half. Partlow led four Roadrunners in double figures with 15 points. Sophomore Dominique Newton contributed 14 points. Sophomore guard Torres Roundtree added 13 points and a team-leading six assists. Sophomore center Matt Webb registered a double double with 12 points and a team-leading 12 rebounds for the game.
The Roadrunners travel to West Plains Jan. 25 for a 7 p.m. Region XVI matchup with Missouri State University-West Plains.
“We have to be ready to play,” said Thomas. “Our intensity level has to be high and our attention to detail strong. I’m really looking forward to it.”
